The Avalon is now registered and ready to go. The thing is so damn comfy and the aircon is amazing. Very clean except for a small dents on the roof and bonnet. Airbag light keeps flashing after I accidentally drained the battery first day (too used to automatic headlights).

Kinja'd!!!

2002 model with only 91k km! I’m about $3000 aussie dollars into this thing after tax, insurance and registration.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now the sad news.. The day before the Avalon got registered, the Bimmer was rear-ended by an arsehole P-plater (probably on his phone) on the highway. Might get written off and I will end up loosing a lot of money I put into it. This is the exact reason I had bought the Toyota to prevent this!

Sad.

Kinja'd!!!

The damage doesn’t look so bad, but the rear impact bar and boot lid area is bent. I calculated the parts to be around 5k usd. Will be going to the best bmw repair shop in Sydney. I really don’t want it written off though =(

You can always buy the BMW back from the insurance company and fix it yourself. And the Avalon is bulletproof - good choice. And WTF is a P-Plater?

P plate or “provisional plate” in Australia refers to someone who just got their license not too long ago. they have to have a big “P” plate next to their license plate, they’re not allowed to drive certain cars, etc.

That’s a good idea - wish we had that here in US America. Would let us know when to pull into the breakdown lane to get away from bad/unskilled drivers.

You see your car as a person?

Perhaps craigslist or similar for a welder - youtube video props for a discount? A high school student who wants to make his/her bones as a welder? A fund me page to save the car?

No need, I have insurance. If the repair cost is less than the price it’s worth (which is 25k I have insured for) they will cover it. And give me a hire car of equivalent spec. That part I’m excited about haha

Toyota as a daily is a good choice. Cockroaches will drive that car hundreds of years after we nuke each other....

The 135 is super nice, and its a prick you got rear ended. I insure my M5 with Shannons for this exact reason. I have an agreed value as high as I can get so they have no choice but to fix it, or I take the money and fix it myself. I keep the premium down by limited usage, and whilst it may not be as cheap as youi or the like it’s not far off. Plus the multi policy discounts add up. Ive got 3 cars and a house with them. Shit works.

I’ve heard that since Shannon’s changed management a few years ago their service has declined. I’m with GIO, but the insurance is going through the at fault’s NRMA. Either way, it’s choice of repairer, so I am going to Panel One. Now that I have the Toyota I’m going to ask about limited usage.

Just make sure you get choice of repairer and if the car is an ‘I’m owning it till I die’ car, agreed value the highest you can to protect it. Ive found shannons difficult on windscreens, but they all are now. When I had my M3, i bought it for cheap and insured it for less because if I binned it I’d had my fun, and the car was an experience rather than a keeper. Insure not according to the value of the car, but the value it has to you. Thats not to say you should under insure something you have buckets of money tied up in, but more to say that if it has more personal value to you than what it’s worth in cash, its best to spend that extra on protecting it. Every cent I spend on the M5, insurance, maintenace or otherwise is fun money to spend. I grumble about not having enough to spend on it but never about how much I’ve spent on it. Spoken by someone who has bought the same car (that is the exact car) twice.

Interesting to see which hire car they choose ...
